I know that when clients feel prepared, they can relax and that’s when we capture the best photos of all. Because of this, preparing families for their in-home newborn sessions is a huge part of my job as the best newborn lifestyle photographer in the Frisco area. And I’ve noticed something when prepping my clients, and that is: of all the things I am asked by clients getting ready for their Frisco newborn session, the most commonly asked question is:
What should my newborn wear?
While I know you may have a special outfit that you feel should have its moment in the sun, your in-home newborn session is not the time to get fancy or fussy. On the contrary, I advise my clients to take a less is more approach to dressing their newborns for their photo sessions.
Now, when I say “less is more,” I’m not getting cheeky…nor do I suggest your newborn does. But simple is really best when it comes to what to wear for a newborn session. A basic white, short-sleeved onesie is the honest-to-goodness best option for photo day. A onesie is great because it keeps the focus on your sweet baby and also allows for their little toes to show – and for me to photograph them easily.

I recommend buying a variety of sizes of onesies to see what fits best when the photo session day arrives. Babies come in all different sizes and newborn clothes do not always fit every newborn. Save the tags and return what you don’t use! You want an easy but close fit, without any bunching or diaper peek-a-boos that could come from wearing something too big. While that’s fine for every day – and every mama loves something that baby can grow into – for photo day, we want the fit to be just right.
If you want to add a dash of personality to what baby is wearing, I love a swaddle, and I know so many mamas do, too. Swaddles can bring in some playfulness through fun colors and patterns. These swaddles from MilkMaid Goods are my favorites, and they can be easily put on – or removed – to change the feel at a moment’s notice. Knotted baby gowns are another great option that we can put on over baby’s white onesie and Caden Lane has a bunch of great options.

What should Mom and Dad wear?
Even though baby is – and should be – the star of the show, the reality is that your newborn may be the easiest one to dress for your in home newborn session! If you’re wondering what the rest of the family should wear, you’re in good company. This is such a common question that I put together a Pinterest page with beautiful and affordable options for the whole family.
Above all, mama, dress yourself first. Think of the age-old oxygen mask mentality: when you take care of yourself first, it’s easier to take care of everyone else. Yes, even when we’re talking about wardrobe!
